What is a Names Server?

Names servers are part of DNS, which provides name resolution. It is an essential component of the Internet that determines the correct location for any host names on the network.

The DNS uses a distributed system of name servers that share the load of name resolution. This system can handle large volumes of data very quickly.

Each name server in a distributed name server system has a database containing host names, IP addresses and other information. These databases are called zone files, and the information contained in them is configured through the use of directives and resource records.

When a user asks for the name of a particular host, a recursive server queries one or more authoritative name servers, which return a result to the recursive server and cache it closer to the client for future lookups. A recursive client then sends back the response, which the user can then use to make additional queries to resolve the server.

These name servers map IP addresses and host names using resource records. These are primary nameservers in each zone.

They are sometimes called root servers or top level names servers. These servers serve as a central point for the Internet's domain name system and are maintained by various organizations around the world.

There are four kinds of name servers: caching only, master, slave. Each type can be configured in different ways and performs different functions.

Masters store original and authoritative zone records for a given namespace. The name server also answers queries about that namespace.

Slaves receive zone information from their master. This is called zone transfers.

Caching-only acts as a second nameserver but does not have any authority over zones. It stores all results of name resolutions, and returns them to the clients after a specific time period. This is determined by zone records.

Dynamic Update is a mechanism which allows entries in Zone Files to be deleted, added or modified with a simple command. The dynamic update option is configured individually for each zone entry by adding an allow-update or update-policy rule.
